Congress Takes Up Budget Hearings

The National Defense Authorization Act is one of the key items.

Congress returned from Easter break to begin over 20 budget hearings in the House and Senate Appropriations Committees. The budget for the Defense Department is a top issue that members of Congress hope to agree on and pass for the coming fiscal year.

Senator Tim Kaine of Virginia expressed concerns that an impasse on this matter could lead legislators to depend on a continuing resolution for an entire year that would maintain the current year’s level of funding.

Chairman of the House Defense Appropriations Subcommittee, Representative Ken Calvert of California said at a March hearing. “We’re going to work together to plus this up somewhat to make sure we meet the requirements.”

Following the hearing, Congressman Calvert said that he wants to expand the defense top line by three to five percent over inflation, citing former a previous defense secretary’s testimony who said the Pentagon needs that annual rate of growth in order to compete with China and Russia.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Speaker McCarthy as the House of Representatives considers both the debt ceiling and the NDAA.
  • For Majority Leader Schumer as he oversees the legislative negotiations in the Senate.
  • For wisdom for members of Congress as they debate funding strategies.
